Dyed Fabric

About Us

Dyeing to Quilt actually began BEFORE it began....

I'm sure that to some that makes no sense at all!

I have always loved colours and the feelings they create in people.

Years ago (really, I don't remember how many....), I took a fabric dyeing class and began to understand that there are endless possibilities for dyeing fabric.  I dabbled a bit when I had time and came up with some interesting but not always beautiful results.

After I lost my so-called real job in 2001 and did some moping about, the idea was born that maybe I could turn my hobby into a new job..... and I began spending a whole lot more time with coloured fingers!  I love it!

Every piece of our fabric is hand dyed and thus is unique.  I dye mostly fat quarters and half meters with a few full meter pieces as well as larger pieces by request.  All of our quilt fabric begins as 100% bleached cotton.

Besides quilting cotton, we carry a selection of hand-dyed cotton clothing; long and short sleeved t-shirts, sweatshirts, sarongs and even socks!

In the last couple of years, I have tried my hand at dyeing yarn and am loving that, too!  It is a whole new ball game in some areas but quietly familiar in others.  Our yarns include 100% merino, blends of merino with fun things like alpaca and silk as well as a few other things as I come across them.

Process.

All of our fabric begins as bleached 100% cotton that is white, white, white. How boring is that??

Hand dyeing is a rather labour intensive process but since you never know for sure what the result will be until it has been rinsed, washed and pressed, it is also exciting and rewarding!

Each piece is washed before dyeing and then dyed with Procion MX dyes which yield fabulous colours. After dyeing, each piece is rinsed at least three times, machine washed and dried and then pressed.

The pieces are individually dyed so there are never two the same. Each is unique!

Care.

As after dyeing, each piece has been rinsed at least three times, machine washed and dried and pressed, they can be used as soon as you receive them. There is no need to prewash.

Once you use your hand dyed fabric in a project, it should be treated the same as any other good quality quilt fabric. Machine wash on gentle with gentle detergent and either lay flat to dry or tumble dry on gentle depending on the nature of the item.
